"But how and through what means does God want to work and kindle faith in us?"
Surely not without means. Nor does He want us, with the enthusiasts, to await the bestowal of special revelations and violent raptures, beyond and beside the use of the Word and the Sacraments, by private speculations. But for that purpose He instituted and ordained a certain means, which He would have to be the tool, organ, or instrument of the Holy Spirit, namely the preaching, hearing, and meditation of the Word. Ro 10:17; 2 Co 3:8; Ps 119:50, 130. Through this means God works and is efficacious in man, enlightens the mind, opens the heart, and thus stirs up and kindles faith by the power of the Holy Spirit. Lk 24:45; Acts 16:14; 2 Co 4:6; Ph 2:13; 1 Co 3:5-6; Jn 1:7." —Martin Chemitz, The Enchiridion, Poellot, Preus, Williams CPH 2007 p. 77
